About Above-Fireplace Mounting

Mounting a TV above the fireplace is one of the most requested installs we do — and one of the easiest to get wrong. The height that looks right from across the room often puts the screen too high for comfortable viewing, and heat rising from the firebox is a real factor for the TV's electronics and the mount's hardware over time.

  • Heat clearance check: when the firebox runs hot, we use a mount with a slight offset or recommend a heat-resistant backer board.
  • Viewing-angle tilt: mounts above eye level get a downward tilt bracket so you're not craning your neck.
  • Cable routing through the chimney chase where possible, so nothing runs down the exposed brick or mantel.
  • Gas and wood-burning fireplaces are treated differently — gas units generally run cooler at the surround, while wood-burning fireplaces need a longer cool-down check before we assess clearance.
Above-fireplace mounts typically fall in the same range as a standard tilt or full-motion mount ($159–$249), with masonry anchoring added if the surround is stone, brick, or tile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Above-Fireplace Mounting

Will heat from my fireplace damage a TV mounted above it? +
Modern flat-panel TVs can generally handle placement above a fireplace as long as there's adequate clearance and the firebox isn't a very high-heat unit. We check the specific clearance for your fireplace before mounting and will flag it if we don't think it's a good fit.
How high above the mantel should the TV go? +
There's no fixed number — it depends on your seating distance and mantel height. We measure from where you'll actually be sitting and use a downward tilt bracket to keep the viewing angle comfortable rather than mounting purely for symmetry.
Can you hide the cables running down to my equipment? +
In most cases yes, either through the chimney chase behind the fireplace or via an in-wall channel beside it, depending on how your fireplace is built.
